Welp it was a good ride Roma fans. The title hopes for the season are officially over, knocked out of the Coppa Italia, knocked out of Champions League, and we just lost to SPAL. This season has been for the birds, from the beginning of the season the Romans have not looked consistent and a lot of that falls on the manager. Di Francesco, while I thought he did not do a terrible job, the boys never really pulled through in clutch situations throughout the season. Ranieri only took over the reigns after the Champions League defeat to Porto and it will take a full season for the squad to get used to his playing style.
The squad definitely needs some fine tuning and hopefully the board will allocate enough money for Ranieri to fix the problems, and there are several areas of need. First being the goalkeeper position. While Olsen is certainly a capable keeper he has had some howlers this season, howlers that played important roles in the outcomes of matches this season. Olsen did have some big shoes to fill after Alisson, but damn he really hurt us in net for much of the season. Upgrade definitely needed.
The back line is another area that needs a little fine tuning. I am confident in having the likes of Florenzi and Kolorov at the outside back positions, but who knows if Manolas is going to the leave in the summer. If that happens then we are left with Fazio as the one who consistently plays up to par (for the most part). Karsdrop, Jesus, Santon, and Marcano are all capable players but they need to get consistent playing time. I have no idea whether or not Ranieri plans to switch to a back three or a back five but there definitely are some changes to be made.
The midfield position is what concerns me the most at this point, besides striker, and it is because the legend, Danielle de Rossi, is getting old as hell. Obviously I am a big de Rossi guy, been my favorite player since watching him elbow the fuck out of Brian McBride in the 2006 World Cup, but he is getting to the point where he is beginning to think about hanging up the boots. Now obviously as a Roma fan I do not want to see this happen, and since Cristante is only here on loan that definitely leaves the central midfield wanting. Nzonzi is a good player but he is also too immobile at times on the pitch and it leaves gaps, he needs to play only as a deep lying central midfielder protecting the back line.
The winger and striker positions are filled with youth talent like Pelligrini, Kluivert, Zaniolo, Schick, and others. Dzeko is getting older and he may not be able to produce the way in which the Giallorossi need him to produce. I would not mind seeing a younger striker come into Roma and light the world on fire, but a proven goalscorer is required.
Ranieri should have his hands full this summer trying to get this squad to where it needs to be, and this squad needs to be competing for trophies. Forza Roma.
