Cue the music.
The Gunners have miraculously made it through the round of 16 in the Europa League. I honestly have never loved this Arsenal team more. The grit and determination to overcome a significant aggregate deficit, hell overcome the aggregate in back to back stages, has shown that Unai Emery is the best man for the job. If I could put the way I am feeling into a video right now it would have to be the seen from The Replacements while the squad is in jail jamming out and dancing to “I Will Survive”. God bless you Gloria Gaynor.
Back to the Gunners. The fact that they were down 3-1 on aggregate still enrages me but once again they climbed out of the depths of hell at the Emirates and managed to salvage the Europa League run. If the Gunners continue to pull this magic then we may be looking at the red team from North London (North London is Red, It will always be Red) hoisting a significant trophy to start off the summer.
The drive and determination of the this team, in front of the home fans nonetheless, is truly inspiring. Who else but Aubambloodclatyang (shout out AFTV) to start the scoring in the 5th minute. Rambo with a silky ball into megging a defender and all Auba had to do was tap it in.
Then Arsenal did not stop there, hell they needed three goals to advance; as well as not give up a goal, and the lads pulled through. In the 15th minute another great ball is played across and you just see a blur, Maitland-Niles, run across and power home a header Olivier Giroud style to make it 2-0 to the Gunners. From that point forward it felt like the Gunners were primed to continue scoring only to have problems hitting the net. The gaffer and I talk about this every week on the podcast (SUBSCRIBE) teams across the world need to be more clinical in front of the net. I mean FFS make the goalkeeper at least make a save. Rennes was trash in front of the net as well, but at least Cech made the saves. It is good to see him performing somewhat well in the Europa League after he lost his starting role to Leno (a move that should have happened prior to the beginning of the season) and he made the saves needed to ensure the Arsenal would advance. Auba again in the 72nd minutes seals the Gunners advance into the next round.
It was good seeing Ozil get the start again and I am still wondering why Mustafi still gets time on the pitch. I understand that Sokratis had to serve his match ban and thank god that Lacazette did not. Still, however, seeing Mustafi in the back is always a testing moment, my TV has survived thus far but thank god I have not put the remote through it watching him fuck up constantly. I can’t really rag on him too much though he was part of a bag line that kept the clean sheet needed to secure movement into another knockout stage. All that being said, he still needs to go during the summer, if he is wearing an Arsenal uniform next season I will lose my collective shit.
The Gunners have a tough draw in the next round, Napoli…as Tyrion Lannister said, “well then we’re fucked”. Hopefully we do not have to pull off a miraculous comeback, again. I am praying that this does not have to happen.
Tottenham’s shit, I cannot wait until the Gunners finish above you this season, and I cannot wait for the same struggles that Arsenal faced after the new stadium to come around and bite you Spurs in the ass. Shit is Tottenham.
