The Return of Zlatan?

Could Zlatan Ibrahimovic really be heading back to AC Milan? The Swedish forward has been lighting it up in the MLS with a struggling LA Galaxy side and has single handedly spearheaded their playoff charge. With 20 goals in 24 appearances, Zlatan again has proved that his age never seems to hold him back as he seems to age like a fine wine. Having graced some of the top sides in different leagues around the world, he has managed to stay prolific and relatively fit given his age. Zlatan previously played for Milan on a season long loan from Barcelona in the 2010-11 season. After scoring 14 goals that season, he committed his future at San Siro with a permanent contract with the Rossoneri. The outspoken forward left the following season for oil rich PSG, where he enjoyed great success. Could the Swedish icon actually return to Milan at the age of 37?

Zlatan’s super agent Mino Raiola opened up to the media that he is willing to offer the services of his client to the Milan side. This deal is an interesting one to say the least. At the age of 37, many of the world’s top footballers have retired or at least shown some significant signs of aging and decreased performance. Zlatan seems to age-less, he has 20 goals this season already with the Galaxy and 28 in all competitions with Manchester United in his first season in England. His humorous ego has made him a fan favorite everywhere his career as taken him, making him something of a cult hero at San Siro.

Zlatan is a rare breed having played for both Inter and AC Milan at San Siro and was prolific in both spells. AC Milan are a legendary club that have struggled in the past years, especially in finding a long term front man. Zlatan has found prolific form in each country his nomadic career has led him, there is little doubt from fans that he could have short-term success at the struggling club. Zlatan looks back at his time at AC Milan fondly and Raiola seems to be all for it in terms of making the deal come to fruition.

Former AC Milan midfielder and current gaffer Gennaro Gattuso has branded the transfer talk linking Ibrahimovic to the club as “hot air”. Gattuso is the man tasked with turning the legendary club back into a European threat, a mission that will take years of smart transfers and shrewd player management. Gattuso needs players to build AC Milan back into an Serie A powerhouse, and to be fair to Zlatan, the acquisition of a 37 year old is not one that builds the future of the club. Whether Zlatan will admit it or not, he is coming to the end of his career, a move to Milan may give fans a blast from the past with a fan favorite but it is not in Gattuso’s best interest. The season long loan of Gonzalo Higuain from Juventus has provided Milan with a world class striker that does away with the purpose of re-signing Ibra. Zlatan would provide short-term success and double-digit goals in a 1 year deal at the club. Higuain is the man that will provide that already as his loan extends to the end of the current campaign. Gattuso sees no purpose in signing the Swedish front man as loanee Andre Silva also gains valuable playing time in Spain while Higuain leads the line for Milan.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of the most iconic footballers of the modern era and has made a name for himself for seemingly getting better with age. Not many people doubt that he could bring goals to the struggling side but at the moment, it does not seem overly likely that he signs with the club. Whether is happens or not, Zlatan’s legacy will never be tarnished and the Milan club will continue to build toward the future in hopes of becoming a European powerhouse once again.
