This Week in 1984: The Battle at The Bernabeu

In 1984, one of the most historical Copa Del Rey matches ever went down at the Santiago Bernabeu. One of the most historic matches at the Bernabeu and Real Madrid wasn’t even on the pitch. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for Athletic Bilbao over Barcelona, but the scoreline was not even the main headline. Lets have a look at the aftermath from this match, and just why it is so well known.

This would end the great Maradona’s career with the Catalonian club. It ended it defeat, but Maradona made sure nobody would ever forget his time there. Building the legacy that we now know him for Mardona left Barcelona swinging. No like actually swinging, he is seen throwing flying kicks at fans that stormed the field, players on the field, shoot even the managers could of caught the smoke. Maradona has some very infamous moments in football, but I don’t think it gets any worse than this. A man with so much talent on the pitch always had the last laugh. While the teams tried to celebrate in one of Spain’s great rivalries we had Maradona beating the shit out of everyone that looked at him funny after the match.

This is a day that even though I was not even born yet I will never forget. Watching replays of Bilbao scraping and clawing their way to victory, then to see Maradona doing his best Bruce Lee impression is all you need to know about the excitement in La Liga. To this day the clubs still have bad blood, and GOD DAMNIT if it doesn’t lead to some spectacular football. Cheers everyone
